Local and Service Businesses: 82% Score Zero on AI Visibility (67 Scans)
Local and service businesses · a TopNamed snapshotWhat We Measured
We scanned 67 local and service businesses to see how often AI assistants recommend them when potential customers ask buying questions. Using Claude with live web search, we tested real questions a customer might type before hiring a service or making a purchase, then recorded whether the business appeared in the answer.
The results were weak across the board. The average visibility score came in at just 8 out of 100. 82% of the businesses scored a flat zero, meaning they were not mentioned at all in any tested answer. 88% scored under 30. On average, each business had 3.7 buyer questions that went completely unanswered in their favor.
What AI Assistants Answer Instead
When the AI didn't mention the businesses we scanned, it didn't stay silent. It pulled answers from other sites that happened to rank or get cited more often. In this batch, the most frequently cited sources included covethouse.eu (9 mentions), arabmls.org (7), bmtcinterior.com (7), creativedesignegypt.com (5), algedra.ae (5), antonovich-design.ae (5), brabbu.com (5), and top10cairo.com (5).
These are a mix of design portfolios, directories, and regional listing sites. None of them are guaranteed to be the best answer for any given customer. They are simply the ones showing up because they have the content and structure that AI systems currently pull from. That is the core issue: visibility isn't about being the best business, it's about being the business the AI can find and cite with confidence.
The Questions That Go Unanswered
Across the sample, buyer questions spanned a wide range of services and languages, including:
- best luxury interior designer in Riyadh
- best architects for commercial building design in my city
- شركة مكافحة النمل الأبيض بالرياض موثوقة
- أفضل شركة نقل عفش في جدة
- best project management tools for small teams
- how much does pool construction cost Oman
- where to buy wall art online
- جولة VR افتراضية للمشروع قبل التنفيذ
These are not vague or generic questions. They are specific, high-intent, and exactly what a ready-to-buy customer asks. When a business has no answer sitting in the AI's index for these, the AI fills the gap with whoever it does have content for, in any language the question is asked.
What To Do This Week
1. Write direct answers to your top buyer questions. Not blog fluff, actual plain-language answers to things like pricing, service areas, and comparisons, in a dedicated page or FAQ section. 2. Check language coverage. If your customers search in more than one language, make sure your site has content in those languages too, not just translated navigation. 3. Claim and clean up directory listings. Several of the sources AI cites instead are directories. Make sure your own listings on similar sites are accurate and complete. 4. Add specifics AI can quote. Prices, timelines, service areas, and certifications are the kind of concrete details AI assistants tend to lift directly into answers. 5. Re-scan after changes. Visibility shifts as content changes and as AI assistants recrawl the web, so check again after updates rather than assuming nothing changed.
None of this guarantees a specific ranking or placement in AI answers. It improves the odds that your business has something for the AI to find and cite when the moment comes.
Method
This report is based on 67 scans of local and service businesses run in the last 90 days, using Claude with live web search to test real buyer questions against each business's online presence. Scores reflect how often and how clearly each business appeared in the resulting answers.

Every unanswered question above is a buyer sent to a competitor. For a business in this category, TopNamed writes the missing answers from its own website, publishes them so AI assistants can read them, and rescans every Monday. Week by week the questions flip, the visibility score climbs, and the business becomes the top name AI gives for its industry and region. Automatically, from the day it signs up.
